Molecules Don’t Lie
Materials are made from molecules.
Those who understand molecular interactions can see their history. Failed materials often leave marks within their microscopic structures which act like finger prints from a crime scene. These marks can point to modes of failure and identify abuses or design flaws.
It takes the right tools and the right experience to detect these fingerprints. GK experts utilize some of the best electron microscopes in the world: at the Canadian Centre of Microscopy and the University of Toronto. These microscopes provide big insights into some of the small clues left behind after a loss.
The microscopes are used to determine failure modes. Was the part abused? Was it filled with manufacturing defects? Or was it exposed to corrosive environments?
